Event description

The Central Sahel is facing a humanitarian crisis, with increasing insecurity and violence exacerbating existing need and food insecurity. With challenges on many fronts, the region is a crowded operating environment, and this is creating challenges for civilian-military coordination. We must make sure all actors understand each other and adhere to humanitarian law to ensure the protection of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Join us for a panel discussion centering on the actions we can take to improve how humanitarian and military actors coordinate in the Central Sahel. We will bring together leaders from key sectors (humanitarian, military, CSO and government) for an invigorating discussion. Panellists will build on the practical foundations in place, draw on lessons learned and together reach a shared understanding of what successful civil-military coordination looks like and why it is important.

The side event is co-hosted by the Government of the United Kingdom, the Norwegian Refugee Council and UNOCHA. The side event will lead to recommendations and a follow up plan, which will be put forward to the Ministerial Roundtable on the Central Sahel to be held on 20 October 2020, hosted by UNOCHA, Government of Denmark, Government of Germany and the EU.

This side event will comprise a panel discussion and interactive audience Q&A, with opening remarks from the UK’s Minister for Africa, James Duddridge MP and closing remarks from a UNOCHA representative and the UK’s Special Envoy for Famine Prevention and Humanitarian Affairs, Nick Dyer.

Simultaneous interpretation of the Roundtable will be provided in English and French

Le Sahel central fait face à une crise humanitaire sans précédent, caractérisée par une insécurité et une violence croissante exacerbant les besoins existants et l'insécurité alimentaire. Les panélistes s'appuieront sur les pratiques en place les enseignements tirés de leur expérience pour dégager une compréhension commune de ce à quoi ressemble une coordination civilo-militaire réussie.

L'événement parallèle est coorganisé par le gouvernement du Royaume-Uni, le Conseil norvégien pour les réfugiés (NRC) et l'UNOCHA. Il débouchera sur des recommandations et un plan de suivi, qui seront présentés à la table ronde ministérielle sur le Sahel central qui se tiendra le 20 octobre 2020, coorganisée par l'UNOCHA, le gouvernement du Danemark, le gouvernement de l'Allemagne et l'UE.

L'interprétation simultanée de l'événement sera assurée en anglais et en français.
