Nairobi 2015 Core Professional Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy

The Thematic Workshops on IHL address critical challenges of International Humanitarian Law in current conflict situations. The two-day workshops complement the Core Professional Trainings on Humanitarian Law and Policy. Participants in the Thematic Workshops are expected to have completed the Core Professional Training in Humanitarian Law and Policy (or an equivalent multi-day training).

The Nairobi 2015 Thematic Workshop on Multilateral Missions and Implications for Humanitarian Action (22-23 October) will take place right after the 3-day Core Professional Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy (19-21 October) in the same location.

Summary description:

The workshop will begin by looking at the evolution of multilateral operations over the last two decades, with a focus on the rationale of the different modalities, characteristics, and challenges. The speakers will then address of integration in futher detail, looking not only at the impact on the humanitarian component but also at the mutual impact of humanitarian action and political processes in a crisis context, including the relation with armed groups. During the second day, the workshop will hone in on the applicable legal framework for accountability of armed forces involved in multilateral operations, and follow with a focus on the strategies that can be put in place for the enhancement of the protection of civilians.
