Upcoming webinar on creating inclusive cities in South Africa amidst COVID-19

Join us for a webinar on how a number of cities in South Africa are helping those forcibly displaced to cope through the pandemic.

On 20 November, join us for a conversation between United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a refugee representative, and city authorities to discuss the commitment to create inclusive cities despite the challenges that COVID-19 presents from 10:00-11:30 am South African Standard Time (SAST).

The UN Secretary General’s Policy Brief on COVID-19 in an Urban World reckons that urban areas are at the epicentre of the pandemic, accounting for an estimated 90 per cent of cases. Overcrowding and urban areas with poor infrastructure and housing or weak local governance leads to higher virus transmission.

This event is part of the webinar series on inclusive cities. If you would like to know more about inclusive cities, you can access the video and audio recording of previous events such as the UNHCR and the Intercultural Cities (ICC) event on ‘Creating Inclusive Cities’ and the PHAP, UNHCR and Mayors Migration Council (MMC) webinar on ‘Inclusive COVID-19 Responses of Cities in the Americas’.

The event will be held virtually, and participants will be able to connect via Zoom. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in Arabic, English, French and sign language, and will include closed captions.
