London 2017 Thematic Workshop on Islamic Law and Armed Conflict

Course Description

This workshop is designed to introduce humanitarian professionals to Islamic legal thought on war and civilian protection. The workshop will first provide a conceptual introduction to Islamic law, through which participants will learn about the basic terminology for speaking about Islamic law, its sources and its basic precepts. It will then provide specialized segments on the classical Islamic rules of war, and contemporary justifications for the use of violence on the part of non-state armed groups claiming to apply Islamic law. The workshop will close with a discussion of contemporary multi-lateral approaches to counterterrorism.

Target audience

The course is designed for experienced practitioners and policy professionals, including staff of government agencies, NGOs, and the UN, and others involved in conflict areas, such as journalists, members of the military, and scholars. Participants in the Thematic Workshops are expected to have completed the Core Professional Training in Humanitarian Law and Policy.
