Bangkok 2012 Advanced Professional Trainings on Humanitarian Assistance and Protection

- Thematic Workshop on Engagement with Non-State Actors: Challenges and Opportunities (24 - 25 May 2012)
The Core Professional Training on Leadership and Management of Humanitarian Action is a new curriculum developed in partnership between PHAP and HPCR, following surveys and interviews with PHAP members and representatives of major employing agencies in the humanitarian sector. The Core Professional Training on Leadership and Management of Humanitarian Action takes place over five full days and serves as a unique opportunity to further refine the knowledge, competencies, and skills necessary to address contemporary humanitarian challenges faced by managers and team leaders in the context of humanitarian response. The training will focus, in particular, on building the strategic capabilites of mid- to senior-level professionals working in the field.
The Core Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy is conducted over three full days and serves as unique opportunities for acquisition and refinement of the skills necessary to address contemporary humanitarian challenges. Lectures, case studies, and simulation exercises are integrated into a curriculum narrative informed by legal principles, recent scholarship, contemporary challenges, and current debates. The training is tailored to professionals interested in gaining foundational knowledge, developing a strategic perspective, and engaging in exploratory discussions regarding potential responses to emerging legal and policy questions.
The Thematic Workshop on Engagement with Non-State Actors: Challenges and Opportunities will introduce humanitarian professionals to the particular legal frameworks and policy conundrums when engaging with non-state actors. The workshop will cover topics such as the status of non-state armed groups under IHL, the measures that armed groups can take to improve the respect of IHL, and the regulation of humanitarian engagement with non-state armed groups.
